The Los Angeles-based company Ouai didn’t become a household name in its own right until around 2019 when the team made a gamble on a novel means of distribution. Ouai sampled one million units of its leave-in conditioner in FabFitFun subscription boxes. It was the company’s biggest sampling program ever.

Women Entrepreneurs Are Incredibly Resilient

According to Audrey McLoghlin, founder of the clothing brand Frank & Eileen, female entrepreneurs are uniquely suited to handle these kinds [fighting for success] of crises. “Women are incredibly resilient and built to be able to handle chaos,” she says. “It’s how we’re created for motherhood—that’s constant chaos. We’re built that way.”

McLoghlin knows just how hard entrepreneurship can be. She launched her Los Angeles-based company in 2009 after declaring personal bankruptcy during the Great Recession and spent the next decade fighting to turn it into a success, which she did.

Teens Are Open to Pursuing Entrepreneurship

Research from Junior Achievement and Ernst & Young LLP (EY) found that 41% of teens are open to pursuing entrepreneurship over a traditional job, and among current business owners, 13% got their start at age 18 or younger.

Many of the young entrepreneurs below fall into that camp and have continued on their path of success in the years that followed, thanks to great ideas, unwavering determination, and support and guidance from the right mentors.

Fasting Growing Group of Entrepreneurs: Black Woman-Owned Businesses

Although Black women make up less than 10% of the U.S. population, they’ve emerged as the fastest-growing group of entrepreneurs in the country. 

According to the Brookings Institution, between 2017 and 2020, the number of Black women-owned small businesses increased by nearly 20%, far exceeding the growth of women-owned businesses and Black-owned businesses overall.

This Female Entrepreneur's Got It: From a Background in Engineering to a Multi-Million Dollar Apparel Business

Learn how Audrey McLoghlin, founder and CEO of Frank & Eileen revamped a men's product for women. The bootstrapped business was a hit — and pledged $20 Million to support women entrepreneurs.

Audrey wanted to reinvent the button-up shirt for women using unbelievable menswear fabrics. 

Visit Frank & Eileen.  The name?  Audrey's grandparents, Frank and Eileen. "They were married in Ireland in 1947, and they lived a beautiful, romantic, old-fashioned life — I don't know if they would describe it that way, but they lived in a little stone cottage, never owned a car, just had a really charming life," says Audrey.

Audrey goes on to say, "The world would be a completely different place if at least 50% of the entrepreneurs and business owners out there were women. We'd live in a very different place."

The Presence of Women in Business Is Growing

Women today are continuously breaking barriers in the workplace, rising to positions of power, and running their own businesses.

Women in leadership, and ownership roles have revolutionized certain aspects of business. According to a report from Women’s Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub (Canada), the majority of women-run businesses were more proactive in addressing employees’ skills gaps, as 15.6 per cent of all businesses had no plans to do so compared to only 11.7 per cent of majority women-owned businesses.

Two Illinois-Based Women Business Owners Are Rocking It for Mother's Day

Thanks to the Illinois Made Program, these two women entrepreneurs are expanding their unique businesses.  The Illinois Made Program exposes them to a broader, more diverse customer base, boosting sales and introducing their mouth-watering products to thousands of the state’s visitors.

Who are the lucky business owners?  Jana Farmer, owner of Ms. Jana’s Candy located at 1649 Montgomery Road, Unit #10, in Aurora, Illinois, and Dominique Leach, owner of Lexington Betty Smokehouse restaurant, located at 756 E. 111th St., in the historic Pullman community.

The Illinois Made Program celebrates small businesses and includes them in the state’s Traveler’s Guide and other tourism information. The program helps drive more customers to the highlighted businesses.

Sinking brand valuations, a shaky economy and the rollback of DEI initiatives are pressuring women founders in fashion and beauty (and other industries) — but a new playbook is helping them navigate the storm.

It’s a tough time to be a founder no matter what your background. High interest rates, the post-pandemic crash in consumer brand valuations and a gloomy economic outlook have made fundraising difficult.

Women and minority entrepreneurs have an extra layer of challenge, as they’re already underrepresented — female-led start-ups received just shy of 20 percent of overall investment in 2024, according to Pitchbook. They’re now seeing many of the initiatives designed to give them a seat at the table rolled back amid legal threats by the Trump administration and conservative activists.

It’s true that diligence is key for any founder, but women and those from underrepresented groups have to push even harder on all fronts with the playing field stacked against them, experts say.  To come out a winner, you have to be unstoppable with your efforts.

Rowling – each individual came from a rocky start in life yet managed to find their own way and achieve success.

Be inspired.  As Walt Disney said, "If you can dream, you can do it."

Alice Walton Joins the $100 Billion Club

These 15 people have 12-figure fortunes. One of the individuals featured is Alice Walton, the only daughter of Walmart founder Sam Walton (d. 1992):

In September, 2024 Walton became the world’s wealthiest woman once again, overtaking French L’Oréal heiress Françoise Bettencourt Meyers, who had surpassed her for the previous two and a half years. The Walmart heiress is best known for spearheading the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in her family’s hometown of Bentonville, Arkansas. She has given away an estimated $1.7 billion, including a recent gift of $249 million to help fund the new Alice L. Walton School of Medicine, also in Bentonville. 

In all, the 15 “centibillionaires” are worth $2.4 trillion, nearly $400 billion more than a year ago—and more than the planet’s 1,500 “poorest” billionaires combined. Put another way, this group of just 0.5% of the world’s 3,028 billionaires holds an incredible 15% of all billionaire wealth.

How Women Entrepreneurs Navigate Being in a Male-Dominated Field

Wright State University hosted a panel featuring four female business owners in the food and business industry.  The event provided a platform for these entrepreneurs to share their unique experiences, challenges, and successes.

One was Mary Crumley-Effinger, Managing Partner at Texas Roadhouse.  She shares how she navigates being in a male-dominated field.  

"For me, like we said before, it's a male-dominated field, so making sure you find those allies and the people to look up to whether they're in your business or a business like yours. It doesn't necessarily have to be the same restaurant business. Someone that you can ask to support you in your endeavors," Crumley-Effinger said.

Strong Leaders Stand With Their Allies

We all watched in horror and shock the White House meeting yesterday (2/28/25) with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro makes a great statement:

"Strong leaders stand with their allies and they stand on their principles – and I believe we must continue to advocate for the values of freedom and liberty, not cower to dangerous dictators like Vladimir Putin."

And as Zelenskyy says, "It's very important to save our country, our values, our freedom and democracy."

I ask all women to #standwithUkraine and their valiant people.

Make Sacrifices Really Happily

In this article, a group of women business owners recently reflected on their achievements and stresses and also provided insight for other potential entrepreneurs – from following your dream to living the dream.

“I’m one of those people who prefer to work 24 hours a day and when you have your own business that’s exactly what you do,” [Terri] Cooper said. “This is not my first business. I owned a cheerleading camp for 20 years and I was a teacher and a coach and a counsellor before this, so I knew what I was in for, and I make the sacrifices really happily.”

Terri, one of the entrepreneurs featured in the article, runs Village Boutique in Detroit.

Women Entrepreneurs Are Reshaping the Business Landscape, Especially in Uzbekistan

Dono Zupparhanova is one of many women entrepreneurs reshaping the business landscape in Uzbekistan, leveraging financial services to enhance resilience and driving community development across the country. 

In her shop, Dono Zupparhanova carefully curates a selection of colorful bed linens and towels, each item a testament to her family’s long history in the textile industry. Her journey began in 1996, when her mother opened the Demir Shopping Centre, introducing foreign textiles to Uzbekistan. Today, Zupparhanova  continues that legacy as the newest entrepreneur running the business her mother started.

Zupparhanova plans to open four more stores by the end of the year.  She is committed to uplifting other women entrepreneurs, sharing her experiences, and breaking down societal barriers in Uzbekistan.

The Neurodivergent Female Entrepreneur

A Growth Mindset Leads to Leadership for Women

How do fixed versus growth mindsets affect women’s ability to see themselves as leaders in the workplace?  That's the question asked of  Julia Lee Cunningham and Sue Ashford from the Ross School of Business and here's Ashford's answer.

As discussed in Ashford’s recent book, The Power of Flexing, leadership comes with many challenges. The skills involved are new for emerging leaders, and the challenges only get more complex as leaders rise in the organizational ranks. Having a growth mindset in which setbacks are considered learning experiences rather than indictments of skill helps leaders to stay “in the game,” continually trying to be more of a leader and to both face and cope with those challenges. A growth mindset helps leaders (and all people) feel empowered when experiencing challenges and setbacks.  

By broadening how leadership is defined and valued, organizations could create more inclusive pathways to leadership roles.

How Women-led Rural Enterprises Grow in India

To identify mechanisms that would help India-based women-led enterprises grow to their full potential, the World Bank carried out a study in six Indian states. 

The study showed that more than 85 percent of women-owned, rural, non-farm enterprises are concentrated in five sub-sectors: retail trade, manufacturing of apparel, food products, food and beverage services and the handloom sector.

Sara Blakely Has Always Been Her Own Bellwether

Spanx Founder Sara Blakely has always been her own bellwether. Blakely launched Sneex, a “luxury hybrid stiletto” which retails between $395 and $595.  

“I own stilettos and I own sneakers already, but I don’t own the combination of the two. As a consumer I wanted the combination of the two,” Blakely says. For her, the shoe is the intermediary between dressy and casual. (She cites Sneex as ideal for the classic jeans-and-a-nice-top outfit formula.) 

She goes on to say, “I designed them to be able to wear every day, but 100% women will embrace them and wear them formally. Women are already wearing regular sneakers in formalwear, so I think that that is going to happen for sure."

Observations From India: Functions of a Woman Entrepreneur

BIG news :-)!  Women entrepreneurs are not different from the concept of entrepreneur, all the concept characteristics and functions are applicable to women entrepreneurs. 

The role of women in family and society is changing very fast – thank goodness. The days when women were typically expected to look after household activities have changed in various social aspects like equal treatment to women, no discrimination between males and females allowing for equal opportunities to work in any field.  Slowly these changes have empowered woman to become more competitive and also encouraged her to start a business.

The article was written in 2017.  It also includes some traits of women entrepreneurs (additional articles).  Different perspective due to India origin.  Very academic.  

Faith-Filled Women Business Owners

According to the Minority Christian Women Entrepreneurs Network (MCWEN), women of color account for 47 percent of all women-owned businesses — around 5.8 million in total — employing over 2.2 million people and generating $386.6 billion in revenue.

More and more, entrepreneurs are stepping into the business world, driven not just by a passion for their products and services but also by a deep sense of faith. These “faith-filled” business owners see their work as a means to serve their communities, live out their beliefs and build a legacy for their families.

Women Entrepreneurs Hit a Funding Wall

When Oriana Papin-Zoghbi was looking for venture capital funding to develop a new type of test for ovarian cancer, she found her pitch did best with women investors. “They were able to resonate with the problem we are trying to solve,” she said.

Avestria Ventures, a fund focused on women-founded start-ups, led an early investment of $5 million in Ms. Papin-Zoghbi’s company, AOA Dx. And two years later, Good Growth Capital, a firm founded by women, led an additional $17 million investment.

Raising the next round of funds is expected to be difficult.  It's not the first time that women entrepreneurs hit a funding wall.

Won't this surprise you!  UC Berkeley graduates have founded more venture-backed companies than undergraduate alumni from any other university in the world, according to the 2024 PitchBook university rankings. 

Venture capital is paying attention to Berkeley-generated companies. And they claim they are just getting started.

Big note:  Berkeley was ranked first for female graduates who started businesses, first for female-founded companies and first for the amount of capital raised by women. 

“That UC Berkeley is No. 1 globally across five major categories, including three for female founders, shows how Berkeley continues to light the way, and we do so inclusively,” [Laura] Hassner [executive director of UC Berkeley Innovation & Entrepreneurship and Berkeley Changemaker] said.

Black Women Entrepreneurs Make Significant Contributions to the Economy

According to the Wells Fargo 2024 Impact of Women-Owned Businesses Report, between 2019 and 2023, Black/African American women-owned businesses saw average revenues increase 32.7%, compared to 12.1% for all women-owned businesses. 

In spite of this impressive growth, systemic disparities in funding and mentorship opportunities persist. Fortunately, new programs are addressing these gaps.

For Women In Business, Simply Being Well-Connected Is Not Enough

Engaging in the same networking activities as men, such as golfing or having a beer together, the logic seems to go, will increase women’s exposure to work opportunities.  A new study by Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management professors Brian Uzzi and Yang Yang suggests this advice isn’t quite right. While it’s true that highly connected women tend to land better jobs and build their businesses faster, the most successful women also have something they cannot get through “beers with the boys”: close ties with female peers.

Here's the key:

“Men really need a network that’s going to maximize their access and exposure to market information,” says [co-author and Professor] Brian Uzzi. Women, however, “need the same thing men need and one thing more.”

Specifically, women need “private information,” which may include insider tips about a company’s leadership culture and politics, or hints about how to make an impression in a male-dominated industry, for example.

Are you intentional with your nighttime habits?  These folks are.  They set themselves up for success each night by creating routines that help them wake up energized, ready to accomplish their goals and clear on how they’ll spend each day.

Take it from SPANX founder Sara Blakely who spends the evening with her children and then puts them to bed. Every night, she takes a bath and lights a candle as a way to power down from a hectic day—she sees value in turning off work mode.

Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better

There are a lot of things that women founders can do better than men. Like a "anything you can do, I can do better" attitude.  It works.

With that spirit, Audrey Chocron and Cynthia Phitoussi – co-founders and managing partners of SeedIL, a VC fund focusing on seed and pre-seed Israeli startups – began meticulously researching the local startup ecosystem and became particularly interested in startup accelerators and incubators, and new immigrant entrepreneurs like themselves.
