Happy 20th Birthday Escape From Corporate America (2024)!

When I started this blog in 2004 (here's one of the first posts), people didn't know what a blog was.  Now they do and everyone recognizes the importance of sharing your knowledge with the world for others to grow from your experience.

Take a walk down memory lane with some of my posts celebrating Happy Birthday Escape From Corporate and Happy Anniversary Escape From Corporate America.

And remember y'all, it started with an article I submitted to The Conference Board in 2003 and from there, I started this blog, and from there, well the rest is history.  Here's what I said when I launched and it still is at the core of the my thinking day in and day out:

When I authored "Escape From Corporate America!" published by the Conference Board in 2003, I had no idea the reaction to it would be so profound and overwhelming. My inbox was flooded with email messages from gifted women who could not say enough about their dissatisfaction at work. Apparently, I underestimated just how fed up women are with Corporate America. EFCA offers a comprehensive look at why women are leaving BIG companies for entrepreneurship. Hint: They want freedom, flexibility, recognition, more money, and opportunities to leave a legacy -- all the things they once thought they would find within corporations. Are you ready to ... "Escape From Corporate America?"  

This blog serves as a beacon of hope for women entrepreneurs who aspire to create their own destiny.  Hooray to you for continuing your readership here which I thank you for.  We started with a handful of readers a month and now we range anywhere from 30,000-60,000.

Female Entrepreneurs Are a Major Driver of Business Startup Growth

Americans have started more new businesses last year than ever since data collection started and female entrepreneurs are a major driver of that growth.

New data from my company, Gusto, shows that women started half of all new businesses in 2023. This is compared to a mere 29% in 2019. Women-led businesses have proven uniquely resilient to tough economic conditions like persistently high inflation and interest rates, and they generated $2.7 trillion in revenue last year. 

For women, flexibility is the No. 1 reason for starting a business.  They want to have the freedom to decide how they work.

At Escape From Corporate America (EFCA), we have known this to be true since 2003 on the flexibility and freedom parts of Gusto's findings.  Here's what I said in 2003 when EFCA was launched:

"They [women] want freedom, flexibility, recognition, more money, and opportunities to leave a legacy -- all the things they once thought they would find within corporations."

Women-Led Enterprises Are Regenerative Forces in Our Economy

Around the world, small businesses are the hearts and souls of communities. Your local barber and corner stores offer more than just transactional interactions for essential products and services. They are places where people listen to your everyday problems and foster a sense of belonging. What’s more, there’s a one in three chance that these micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) will be led by women.

Policymakers, businesses, banks, community leaders, and individuals have a role to play in unlocking women’s economic power, valued at $10 trillion annually. We need whole system change that includes comprehensive macroeconomic reforms including fairer tax systems and recognition of the care economy.

We need localized women-centered financial products and entrepreneur support systems to create more equitable economies for all marginalized groups, including women.

The latest evidence on women-led businesses finds that they not only reduce poverty but that they also drive job creation, spark innovation, and contribute to safer, greener and more vibrant communities, ensuring that everyone thrives collectively. These women-led enterprises are regenerative forces – building business communities and hiring local workers. Local economies simply cannot succeed without them.

Twists and Turns on the Path to One Woman's Success

Amy Somerville, CEO of Success Magazine says that the path to success is anything but straightforward; it’s riddled with twists and turns, setbacks and triumphs.

And, now, as I [Amy] watch my own children play “grown-up,” my heart is full. They create clever roles as entrepreneurs, inventors, artists and social influencers. Will they follow the traditional path of higher education and conventional careers? Who knows? 

She goes on to say that what truly matters is that they [her kids] dare to dream big, set their sights high, push boundaries and understand that with unwavering determination and perseverance, any goal is within reach.

Impact of Female Entrepreneurship on Economic Growth

The central question of the study, "The Impact of Female Entrepreneurship on Economic Growth in Developing and Developed Economies," is: what is the impact of women’s entrepreneurship on economic growth in developed and developing countries?

To answer this question, two hypotheses have been formulated related to the adoption of women’s entrepreneurship as a vector of economic growth. These two hypotheses guided the authors's analysis:

• H1:  The impact of women’s entrepreneurship improves well-being and accelerates economic growth.
• H2:  The level of human capital contributes to the development of women’s entrepreneurship.

Happy Mother's Day to all, especially mompreneurs!  Mothers are living metaphors of love who believe in only giving and not expecting anything in return. So, this Mother’s Day, let us honor their contribution and provide them with a chance to bask in the glory of their achievements as a mother and a businesswoman.

Etsy Mother’s Day 2024 is a good day to take inspiration from mom entrepreneurs who have been juggling motherhood and running a business.  Consider “the women” (in all forms) out there to excel even in the business sphere, like; being more creative, selling online, building a brand, and being famous worldwide.

Note:  80% of female entrepreneurs sell on Etsy, out of which many are mothers.

Revisiting Women's Entrepreneurship: Breaking Stereotypes and Seizing Opportunities

Globally, one in six women reported an intention to start a business in the near future. The highest entrepreneurial intention rates were observed in low-income countries, where approximately 28% of women expressed intentions to start a business. 

Nearly one in every three entrepreneurs running established businesses is a woman. For start-up activity, there are .80 women for every 1 man. Globally, women were more likely than men to be solopreneurs (1.47 women solopreneurs for every 1 man).

These were among the findings presented in the GEM 2022/2023 Women’s Entrepreneurship report, entitled Challenging Bias and Stereotypes.

What Would You Do If You Could Do Anything?

What would you do if you could do anything?  Back it up a bit, what would you do if you could have a months-long paid leave from work?  For me, as boring as it sounds, I would probably continue doing what I am doing.  For Rahel Mwitula Williams, it was climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.

The mountain, which is 5,895 meters (19,340 feet), and is the largest free-standing mountain rise in the world, took Mwitula six days to climb. But the journey was worth it.

So you know Rahel's job, by day she works as the Director Of Innovation for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and by night she runs her own socially responsible fashion brand ILAVA.

When she was approved to take a three-month sabbatical from her day job earlier this year, instead of taking a staycation, she set her sights on tackling one of the most challenging treks in the world as an emotional reset.

And that she accomplished.   

Nancy Geenen Says Connecting With Leaders on a Human Level Creates a Trusting, Empowering Work Culture

Accomplished entrepreneur, author, leadership coach and strategic facilitator Nancy Geenen spent many years “trying to be someone else, in so many ways.”

Here are Nancy's 5 key thoughts about how a leader showing vulnerability and accessibility can create a trusting, empowering work culture:

1. Being accountable and permitting others to hold everyone accountable. “Invite that open, honest, and vulnerable communication that is built on trust,” Geenen says. “And if you behave in a way that’s unreliable, own up to it.”
2. Asking for advice and committing to do better. Geenen says it’s common for team members to have numerous ideas about how a leader can improve their leadership skills. 
3. Knowing your people and letting them get to know you. Geenen says it’s a leader’s responsibility to model relationship-building. 
4. Being empathetic, not judgmental. Geenen says when check-ins with employees are done with a mindset of positivity, curiosity and empathy, not judgment and criticism, it earns the team’s trust because they feel seen, heard, and supported.  
5. Showing you care. When a leader directly pitches in to help one of their teams, be it problem-solving on a complex project or customer-service issue, or performing a tedious task like changing the toner in the copy machine, it establishes common ground with the workforce, showing the leader has humility and sincerity.

The Power of Exposure and Leading By Example for Women Entrepreneurs

Entrepreneur Vanessa June says the representation of women in entrepreneurship is critically important, emphasizing the power of exposure and leading by example to create a stronger, more diverse ecosystem.

“If we don’t start businesses, then other women aren’t going to see that as a possibility,” said Vanessa, the founder and CEO of Leva, an app-based community that educates and empowers mothers and parents of babies aged 0-12 months.

Making the Leap to Entrepreneurship

After working in bookkeeping and office management for a variety of businesses and nonprofits over the years, Kristin Cole of kCole Bookkeeping and Small Business Consulting finally made the leap into entrepreneurship by opening her own small business.

Cole knows from experience that giving up a regular paycheck and benefits to become self-employed is just one of the leaps of faith that entrepreneurs must take when they step out on their own. “If you don’t have a background in this sort of thing, it can feel really overwhelming – not knowing what you don’t know,” she said.

Women's Entrepreneurial Landscape Is Changing While They Fight for their Dreams

While women have historically faced additional challenges, some female founders say the landscape is changing for the better.  

According to a report from Gusto, more women are starting their own businesses, accounting for nearly half of new entrepreneurs in recent years.

In 2020, women made up 47% of new business owners, a significant jump from 29% in 2019, the report showed. That figure has held near that level — at 49% in 2021 and 47% in 2022 — signaling a stable trend rather than a one-off surge, the report said.

The Woman Who Keeps On Giving

MacKenzie Scott, a woman who keeps on giving, is well known for her philanthropic behaviors and surprise donations to organizations. 

Scott helped build tech giant Amazon with her then-husband Jeff Bezos. The couple divorced in 2019. She currently has a net worth of $33.7 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Scott recently announced $2.15 billion in donations over the past year on her website, Yield Giving. She said in the post that the nonprofit donated to 360 organizations, “every one of whom could use more allies.”

The causes are always wide-ranging.  One organization who is hopeful in receiving a gift from Ms. Scott is Women Entrepreneurs Grow Global®, an under-the-radar nonprofit who has been around since 2015 and educates women on how to grow their business through global expansion.  To date, they have served more than 40,000 women.

Make Some Extra Cash With a Side Gig

Some people have side gigs – ways to make extra cash – that are even more lucrative than their main jobs.  Take Pinky Chong, for example. 

She’s a physical therapist by trade, but she makes $8,000 a month on the side by selling luxury items from brands like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Christian Louboutin, Gucci and Hermes.  She has made her extra cash by selling these items on sites like eBay, Poshmark, Mercari and Facebook Groups.

Reviving An Old School Brand

For 15 years María Obregón, who lives in Northern Chile, has been selling Avon beauty products, turning her work into a family business in which she has been joined by her husband and even the youngest of her children.  "Avon for me means freedom," she says with unconcealed delight. "It means independence. It means fulfilling myself as a woman, as a person."

Recent months have been difficult for Avon and its Brazilian owners, Natura & Co. The conglomerate, which sold its luxury brand Aesop to the French firm L'Oréal for over $2.5 billion, may soon take the same route with another brand, The Body Shop. Natura acquired The Body Shop in 2017 to exploit growing demand for ecological beauty products. But today its priority is to return to maximum profits and spending discipline, prompting a consolidation of assets and interests, reports Reuters.

Founder and Owner Shelley Jack of Sheba Marketing had advised scores of clients on how to market and to strategize for growth but she wasn't prioritizing those lessons to her own business.

Successful Black Female Entrepreneurs Are Climbing Even Higher Mountains

Black women leaders in the United States are the fastest-growing group of entrepreneurs.

Female entrepreneurs.  Women business leaders.  Those who have made it and those who aspire to make it.  These women are driving change, transforming business and making a significant impact on the world. 

Collectively, the 100 women on the list have a record high net worth of $124 billion, up 12% from last year. List members have built careers in a range of industries, including healthcare, entertainment, financial services and technology. 

AI is already having an impact, helping drive up the fortunes of semiconductor firm AMD’s CEO Lisa Su, who is preparing for battle in the coming AI revolution against Nvidia, and Insitro CEO Daphne Koller, a computer scientist whose South San Francisco firm is using machine learning to develop drugs more quickly.
